Ubu is returning to The Arts Centre after the earthquakes. Ubu opened Free Theatre's first residency in the Arts Centre 32-years ago and now opens its second residency in its new space, The Gym. Ubu is inviting the public to weekly Ubu Nights which combine performance and hospitality in ways that he describes as Pataphysical.
Ubu Ubu Night is dedicated to Dada and Surrealist friends like Alfred Jarry, Tristan Tzara, Hugo Ball, Frida Kahlo, Eric Satie, Arnold Schönberg, and others. Entrance is free, the bar is stocked with Cassels beer and Black Estate wine and our special chefs will present platters of French delicacies. Ubu says that to start the Arts anew after a catastrophe like the earthquakes is "right up his rectum”. He also likes the fact that Free Theatre have created a project that reflects the space (and the city) as a work-in-progress, a place to experiment and try new things: "And they have a top-notch sound system and when I tried an experimental fart into the microphone I heard the most beautiful authentic sounding art coming out of the speakers." |
“…fantastic venue, ambiance, performance... thanks for an inspiring night. Bodes well for the revival of our city” "What an awesome beginning to the Arts Centre's new life. Great job guys can't wait to come back again" "What a great night and how lovely to 'meet' such interesting people" |
