Free Theatre's popular annual Kidsfest programme returns every year during July in The Gym. Throughout the week, participants (8-12 years) will explore: mask-making and performance; puppetry; circus and trapeze skills; voice and text work; sound and technical design. These tools will be combined to explore a particular theme with the week culminating in a presentation to family and friends. Previous themes have included Antarctica and the Olympic Games and taken place in around sets and environments that Free Theatre is working on at the current time.
This is a unique opportunity to experience and learn from one of New Zealand's leading exponents of contemporary performance. And it's heaps of fun!

My 9-year-old daughter attended a week long Free Theatre course as part of Christchurch’s Kidsfest school holiday programme. She was there from 9am-3pm for five consecutive days. I was very impressed with the quality of the programme, which engaged the children completely and led them through a rich variety of activities. Several different tutors were involved and they were, without exception, able to relate to the children with warmth, respect, and an ability to scaffold the creative process while letting the children develop their own ideas.
I think this collective creativity sets the Free Theatre classes apart from other drama activities available to young people in Christchurch at present. That, and the fact that the environment was one of a functioning theatre - their tutors were all involved in the theatre themselves and the venue and resources used by the children were all part of this functioning artistic world. This enabled them to feel part of something very authentic.
